Ha ha!
You have been touched by the Nerd Wand! (And may I pause here to say...eeeeeewwwwwwww!)
TypePad isn't the best at stopping spam, but they have a few options. Best (from their site) are:
Turn on Comment Authentication with TypeKey.
Turn on Comment and TrackBack Moderation. (You have to approve all comments)
Require unauthenticated commenters to validate with a CAPTCHA. (Anyone w/o TypeKey has to fill out the word thing)
Close comments and TrackBacks on older entries.
You access the settings via:

Usually you have to turn on that little thingy where we have to type random funky codes that are all swirly and different colors and difficult to read. Or, what the person before me said.

I know that for Wordpress blogs there are a number of nifty plugins that help greatly but I'm not overly familiar with Typepad so I'll just second what communicatrix said.

The fact that you had to ask meant that you weren't a nerd before. The fact that you have gotten the answer means that you are one now.
You say nerd like it's bad.
